Descubren cómo las cianobacterias forman patrones para fijar nitrógeno

Científicos de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid han analizado el proceso para fijar nitrógeno que utilizan las cianobacterias, microorganismos que producen gran contidad de oxígeno y convierten el nitrógeno en formas utilizables por otros seres vivos. Después, han creado un modelo matemático para ver cómo aparecen patrones en los filamentos de las cianobacterias, en los que aproximadamente una de cada diez células se dedica a fijar nitrógeno mientras el resto realizan la fotosíntesis.

On May 30, a video posted to Facebook exceeded 52,000 hits. According to the person posting (Boris Tacle Lopez), the clip showed a "flying saucer".

As of this writing, the publication has been shared over 1000 times. As the image shows, the object flies next to a rainbow in the sky.

Rubén Morales: Los OVNIS de la Antártida (UFOs of Antarctica)

INEXPLICATA is pleased to announce the publication (in Spanish) of researcher Rubén Morales's Los OVNIS de la Antartida (UFOs of Antarctica) in recent days.

Mr. Morales is a social psychologist and an instructor in public communications at the Universidad de Salvador de Buenos Aires, from which he also earned a masters in Political Marketing. He has other publications on subjects pertaining to the South Pole in the Boletín del Centro Naval (Naval Center Bulletin), the Boletín de la Asociación Polar Pinguinera (Polar Penguin Society Bulletin), the Fundación Marambio and the British Antarctic Survey Club.

The promotional release for Los Ovnis de la Antártida reads thus: "The greatest heavenly mystery in the least known of the continents. Reports of unidentified flying objectis in the far south have been more numerous than previously thought. This book collects direct eyewitness accounts - pro and con - for the first time, official documents, declassified files and first-hand sources that provide an array of extraordinary accounts on unexplained phenomena in the white continent."

"One of the greatest challenges of political communications for any government," it goes on to say, "would be to inform its citizens that UFOs definitely exist and are not of this world. The communiqués issued by the Secretariat of the Navy on July 6-7, 1965 regarding UFOs seen over the Argentinean Antarctic were an effort at meeting such a challenge, which in fact unleashed a formidable phenomenon of journalistic multiplication, whose repercussions cascaded into public opinion".

Una cantimplora salvavidas (1923)

Al contemplar esta patente he recordado una idea similar pero mucho más compleja: el destiltraje (Stillsuit) que aparece mencionado en las novelas de la saga Dune, de Frank Herbert. Los destiltrajes, como los fabricados por los Fremen en el planeta desértico Arrakis, eran empleados en esas novelas como medio para sobrevivir en ambientes muy secos. Se trataba de trajes de cuerpo completo capaces de recoger y aprovechar toda la humedad corporal, incluyendo la presente en la respiración humana.

Muchos años antes de que esta fantástica tecnología fuera imaginada, la revista Popular Science, en su edición del mes de octubre de 1926, realizó una recopilación de algunas patentes “locas” de su tiempo. Algún ejemplo de lo que ahí aparece ya ha visitado TecOb, como la trampa móvil para ladrones de bancos. En esas páginas se describe someramente cierto artilugio que recuerda lejanamente a un destiltraje. No aparecían referencias a la patente concreta, pero hoy he tenido la suerte de cruzarme con ella mientras buscaba otra patente en las bases de datos.

Patentes similares ha habido bastantes, pero la que me ocupa hoy es de las primeras que conozco de ese tipo. La idea, presentada por Ada Hogan, de Brooklyn, en 1918 y admitida finalmente en 1923 para ser patentada en los Estados Unidos, surgía de la preocupación hacia los marinos y la posibilidad de quedar a la deriva sin agua potable. Por ello, lo que se presenta en el texto de la patente es la descripción de una especie de cantimplora-condensador, capaz de recuperar agua presente el proceso de respiración humana.

Cabe pensar que el marinero debería llevar siempre colocado el artilugio, como sucedía con los destiltrajes. ¿Hubiera funcionado? No me he parado a realizar cálculos, pero seguramente sí tuviera cierto sentido, aunque sospecho que la invención es un tanto optimista acerca de la cantidad de agua recuperable por este medio. Obama to Disclose UFO Info, According to UFO Lobby Group

Steve Bassett, executive director of the Paradigm Research Group, says that he thinks that President Barack Obama will disclose what the United States government knows about the UFO phenomenon by the end of 2016.

Bassett, speaking in an interview with the Express newspaper in the U.K., appears to be basing this on the media coverage surrounding Hillary Clinton's interest in investigating what the government knows about the phenomenon, and that Obama may want to get the jump on Clinton to become the "disclosure president". The Paradigm Research Group is the only registered lobby group with the U.S. government that is pushing for disclosure on UFOs, and Bassett feels that their efforts are about to bear fruit.
