Super Typhoon Haiyan has become one of the most powerful tropical storms ever recorded, and it's making landfall in the Philippines. The storm has sustained winds of 190 miles per hour, with gusts up to 230 miles per hour. These gusts are straight-line winds as powerful the rotating winds found in an EF-5 tornado, the most powerful tornadic storm. The storm is so large that two thirds of the island country are already under its outer edges. It is expected that its winds will drop somewhat to the area of 140--150 miles per hour when it makes landfall, but it remains an extremely dangerous storm. In the Philippines it's called Supertyphoon Yolanda.
