Nuevas evidencias de la transición al blanco de los agujeros negro

Objetos astrofísicos identificados como agujeros negros podrían ser, en realidad, estrellas de gran densidad. Su formación sería el resultado final de múltiples transformaciones disipativas de agujeros negros en su inverso temporal, agujeros blancos, que en un corto plazo de tiempo se descoloran y dejan escapar la luz en lugar de impedir su salida, según una investigación en la que participa la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

El equipo español gana la competición CanSat de la Agencia Espacial Europea

Más de cien estudiantes de toda Europa han participado en la Competición Europea de CanSat 2017, organizada por la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA) y que tuvo lugar en Bremen entre el 28 de junio y el 2 de julio. La formación española consiguió hacerse con la victoria después de cuatro días de campeonato.

Físicos del CERN observan una nueva partícula con dos quarks pesados

Científicos del experimento LHCb del CERN han logrado observar un nuevo barión que llevaban años buscando. Se trata de una partícula formada por un quark up y, lo que es más novedoso, dos quarks pesados charm. Esto ofrece una herramienta única para probar la cromodinámica cuántica, la teoría que describe una de las cuatro fuerzas fundamentales de la naturaleza: la interacción fuerte.

A new large-scale study of neonicotinoid-based insecticides has demonstrated that the use of this common pesticide is causing damage to honeybee colonies. This is the first in-field study of the effects of the substance on bees, with previous studies being lab-based.

Spain: Possible UFO Sighting in Lorca

A case similar to so many others that occur throughout the planet on a daily basis, involving unidentified flying objects, has reached our newsroom. The difference is that it happened in Lorca.

Witness Alvaro Molina Sanchez, a resident of Lorca, had just arrived home to have dinner with his family on 27 May 2017 around 00:30 hours in the evening. The video's author states the following: "upon reaching a clearing that separates the railroad track from the Francisco Ibanez Martin Secondary School, my wife took out a flashlight to light the way, given the fact that it was a very dark evening. At the same time, I took out my cellphone for the same purpose, but realized that it didn't have a flashlight function. Out of sheer curiosity, I recorded the stars for some ten seconds."

The witness goes on to say: "I gave the recording little importance. Four or five days later, I looked at it out of curiosity and was surprised to see some luminous objects flying by at an abnormal speed. To be frank, I cannot render an opinion as to what they were, but I sense that they're worthy of discussion and study. I've kept the image and you may see the objects in question with greater clarity."

A Shelly Island in the Stream

Of many mysteries surrounding the area known as the Bermuda Triangle, a recent emergence of a mile long sandbar, dubbed "Shelly Island" by a child collecting shells, has attracted much attention from the community nearby at North Carolina's Hatteras Point. This type of land mass often appears only to be swept away again by the southbound Labrador Current whose cool waters cause unruly conditions when met by warmer waters of the Gulf Stream.

Two High-Strangeness Cases from Britain's Declassified UFO Files

While the recently-released batch of 15 UFO documents from the UK's Ministry of Defence failed to reveal any information amounting to the proverbial "smoking gun" evidence that the ufology community has been searching for, the files did contain provocative reports of a UFO encounter involving RAF and USAF aircraft crews over the Mediterranean, and a multiple-witness sighting involving local police in eastern England.

Un equipo internacional de investigadores, liderado por científicos españoles, ha estudiado la respuesta del núcleo exótico de berilio-11 (que solo vive 14 segundos) cuando se le somete a un campo eléctrico intenso generado por núcleos de oro. Mediante complejos cálculos de mecánica cuántica se ha analizado este sistema de tres cuerpos constituidos por un corazón de berilio-10, el oro y un neutrón que forma un característico halo.

Cómo estabilizar grupos de aminoácidos con puentes de hidrógeno

Investigadores de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid han descubierto que los aminoácidos se enlazan en fase gas formando estructuras moleculares muy complejas. La extraordinaria estabilidad de estas estructuras se debe principalmente a los enlaces de hidrógeno que se establecen entre ellas, según han comprobado al analizar agregados de β-alanina, un aminoácido presente en varios nutrientes y tejidos.
